May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month – a month to celebrate individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and the teams who support them.

Your speech therapist or speech-language pathologist (SLP) is usually the most influential professional on your loved one’s AAC team. They serve individuals with a variety of speech or language difficulties –whether present from birth or acquired through injury or disease. They provide evaluations and treatment for individuals who have cerebral palsy, autism, Rett's, Down Syndrome, apraxia, ALS, traumatic brain injury, and other unique situations. We respect so many qualities they possess.

As this important profession reaches a milestone anniversary, let’s recognize some of the amazing ways SLPs share their clinical skills and provide guidance when it comes to AAC.

The Influential Role of the Speech-Language Pathologists

  • SLPs evaluate an individual’s needs and abilities and lead the team in identifying the most appropriate AAC solution
  • They also play a primary role in completing insurance funding requests for an AAC device, when applicable
  • SLPs help your loved one get started with an AAC device, accessories, and vocabulary
  • They offer guidance and goals for language development
  • SLPs customize vocabulary as your loved one’s language and communication grows
  • They teach other members of the team how to model words on the AAC system
  • They connect you to resources and professionals
  • SLPs champion for communication rights for everyone
